Traveller’s diary: noted conversations from Avernum.

(In the Western Great Cave)
Your correspondent: I am ready to help defend against the undead.
Leonhardt: Then I will try my technique for drawing them. Prepare yourself. I don’t know how many there will be.
He begins to walk toward the door.
Leonhardt steps out of his workshop and displays his technique for calling the undead: He starts shouting, at the top of his lungs.

Leonhardt: Come here! Come here! Here, undead! Come here!
Not the most subtle or magically accomplished method of summoning, but, considering how quickly he turns to run back inside, it seems to be having the desired effect.
(From Patrick’s Tower)
Horyn: Some of the fungal mixtures I created have become ... ah ... active. On their own. One of them infected my assistant and made him very ... fungal. It is a tragedy. And very inconvenient.
My assistant/monster is lurking in the fields directly beneath us. He will have to be destroyed before the experiment can take place.
Your correspondent: Is there any way to cure him?
Horyn: Well, the first thing the fungus did was liquefy a large part of his head. So it is unlikely.
(From Gnass)
Pelin-Ath speaks with you while she looks after the slith young. She hands out bits of meat, caresses, and harsh discipline in equal measures. The young sliths almost never join forces and attempt to swarm her.
(From Gnass)
Seleeass: There have always been a few of us who longed for the dark old days of Sss-Thsss and the power of the slithzerikai tribes. A few of them hide in the Great Cave. And now they aid the Slith Horde.
This dark cult is led by Fahdroth Benttail. He is a warped creature. It would be best if he became one our ancestors.
(From Almaria)
Tardiff: The Almaria bridge. One of the first bridges in Avernum. It has a long and storied history.
Your correspondent: A long and storied history? Really?
Tardiff: Of course. First, it was built, and then... people crossed it.... All right. Maybe not very storied. But it is pretty.
(From The Great Portal)
Vanderin: The demons that come here tend to be weak and confused.
Your correspondent: Demons?
Vanderin: Aye. They are drawn to portals such as this one like a moth to a candle. Wait. Sorry. That’s a surface world reference. Let me try again.
They are drawn to portals such as this one like a cave moth to a cave candle. I’m sure you understand.
(From the Western Excavation)
Hydera collapses to the ground, mortally wounded. His rebellion has come to its grim, but inevitable conclusion.
As he lies dying, he says an inspirational speech, a gasped, soaring paean to the joy of freedom and the dignity of all living creatures. Then, his piece finally and decisively stated, he dies.
A while later, you wonder if maybe you should write his words down so they can serve as an inspiration to all. Then you realize that, admidst all the stress and chaos of battle, you have forgotten the bulk of what he said. Oh well.
(From The Castle)
Levitt: I had thought that I was sending you into certain death, something I only rarely enjoy.
(From Fort Duvno)
Vanderin: I got to see the Undead Spiral. Always wanted to. Just tourism, you know. I visited the Tower Colony. Quite lovely, if more on fire than I’d hoped.
(From Fort Draco)
Lt Gelbart: You know, I’ve been thinking about it, and now I’m pretty sure. This is the dumbest mission I’ve ever been on.
