Missions and Plot Information in and around Bargha
  • Mission (for the Mayor): clobber the giants in their fort to the east. There’s no reward, but the giants do have a lot of treasure (including a pathfinder mind crystal). Outdoors, south of the giant fort, you can find far sight (L3).
  • Mission (for the Scimitar): destroy the seeing orb in the secret empire installation in the gremlin cave north of Fort Emerald. This will allow you to join the Scimitar.
  • Mission (for the Scimitar): find the exit out of Avernum to the surface world. For assistance, talk to Erika. The exit is guarded by Sulfras.
  • Info: if you ask Calder (innkeeper) about the Scimitar, he will tell you the password to get into the base underneath Bargha.
  • Info: a dragon lives in the tunnels to the east. (This is Pyrog.)
  • Herbs: east of Bargha and south of the giant fort, there is a patch of mandrake.

  • Info: Once you’ve spoken to Scab, Asp will tell you how to bypass the traps surrounding the mayor’s circlet in Spire.

  • Mission: the witch would like you to find a copy of a book called the ‘Valorim Bestiary’--you won’t find it in the Tower of Magi or in Patrick’s Tower, you’ll have to visit Erika’s library. She will reward you with ice lances (L3).
  • Mission (for the mayor): find out who is leading the bandits who operate north of Fort Saffron.
  • Info: a curious woman called Malka, in the inn, says if you want to strike a blow against the Empire, then you should go to Blosk and ask Royce about the ‘Scimitar’.
  • Info: the priest tells you it is possible to learn the spell return life from a monastery north of Fort Dranlon. Also, there is a source of graymold in that region.
  • Info: if you pay the beggar, then he will tell you that there’s a guy called Eldin in the town jail, who claims to have stolen some jewelry. If you talk to Eldin, he’ll tell you that his friend Bertraud is in possession of a valuable brooch.
  • Herbs: if you pay the witch, she will tell you (a) about the energetic herbs east of Almaria and (b) roughly where to find a patch of mandrake. The mandrake grows south of the giant fort, east of Bargha.
  • To the west of Dharmon is Shaynee’s bazaar selling useful items [slightly expensive]. If you bring her Leith’s message from Blosk, she will reward you with mass curing (L3).
  • Living Statue: it tells you that the local bandits have a secret warehouse in the north of the city. Also a man in the jail (i.e. Eldin) might know something about a brooch.
  • To the south of Dharmon (and west of Fort Remote) is ‘gremlin gold’--recover the royal messenger’s scroll and collect lots of gold and a resistance mind crystal.

Missions and Plot Information in and around Fort Draco
  • Mission: fetch aranea fangs for Aife.
  • Mission: fetch cheap wine for Bill, in the foundry.
  • Mission: Go and ask the chief of the friendly spiders (whose name is ‘Spider’, naturally) for a mission; they ask you to rescue their friend from the nearby aranea city. As a reward you are given access to the malachite brooch, and you can find a defensive glow mind crystal in the aranea city.
  • Info: Boutell the blacksmith can repair weapons (i.e. Demonslayer, if you find all three pieces).
  • To the south-west of Fort Draco, across the bridge, is a small outdoors hut. If you read the scrolls here you can learn the recipe for graymold salve.

Missions and Plot Information in and around Fort Dranlon
  • Mission: Mairwen, the mage, would like you to steal a rare tome from the Sliths’ fort in the swamp. In swamp city itself you can learn repel spirit (L3). As a reward for returning her the book, Mairwen will sell you dispel barrier [extremely cheap].
  • Mission: Captain Rosie will reward you if you kill the chief of the sliths in the fort on the small island to the south of Dranlon.
  • Mission: Captain Rosie wants you to find evidence of what the Slith plans are, for a reward of a lucky bracelet. In the slith island fort west of Dranlon (but north of Sss-Thsss’s fort) you can learn sanctuary (L3).
  • West of Dranlon and north of Sss-Thsss’s fort, is the foul cavern. This place really is foul and full of undead. Here you can learn bind foe (L3) and obtain an anatomy mind crystal.
  • North of Dranlon (west of the river) in the aranea cave, you can learn fireblast (L3), if you have dispel barrier.
  • Far west of Dranlon, in the centre of the waterfall warren, is a cave full of basilisks, gremlins, and eye beasts. Here you can find the orb of thralnai, an artifact that allows you to fly short distances. In addition, in the Lich’s lair are two spellbooks, which teach you the first seven mage and priest spells at level 2.

  • Info: if you want to learn the spell dispel barrier, it may help to talk to the mage in Fort Dranlon.
  • Info: inside the ruins of Grah-Hoth’s old fortress there is a Royal Seal (from the first expedition). (This will enable you to reach the teleportation augmenter. However, to enter the fortress you need to get the gold key--talk to Patrick.)
  • Herbs: there is a small patch of Graymold at the headwaters of the river that runs into the big lake - follow the river from Cotra far, far to the north.
  • North of Fort Emerald in the scree pits is a gremlin cave. Inside you can find lightning spray (L3).

  • Mission: Claudette wants you to locate a scroll of history. You have to visit the dragon Khoth. As a reward, Claudette will teach you the spell unshackle mind (L3).
  • Mission: recover the Mayor’s necklace from the Nephilim fort to the west. Get the Bronze Key from the New Fort (north of Duvno). The necklace is in the locked room on the upper floor of the main floor. Kill Anastasia and you can learn bolt of fire (L3). If you ransack the rest of the fort you will also find healing (L3). Upon completion of this mission you are rewarded with a Crown Token, which will give you access to The Castle.
  • In the crypt to the north of Formello (which you can enter on the 1st day of any month) you can learn mass healing (L3).
  • Living Statue: tells you Motrax knows about a stone key. Nothing about brooches.

Missions and Plot Information in and around Gnass
  • Mission: kill the chief of the dark sliths in the fortifications to the north east. Your reward includes a ring of health. In the fortifications themselves you will find some icy chain mail.
  • Info: to gain entry to the throne room in the Castle of Sss-Thsss you will need an Onyx Key - from one of the other slith forts.
  • Info: the dark sliths have a piece of broken sword in their swamp temple, on the altar. (This is the blade of Demonslayer; while you’re there you can also learn return life (L3)--do a thorough search of the south wall in the upper level.)
  • After you have killed Sss-Thsss, the friendly sliths will teach you blademaster skill (4500 gold/level).

  • Info: hiding behind the temple is a guy called Bertraud. He says he is frightened of a colleague called Eldin in Dharmon. It turns out he is a thief, and he is willing to sell you the platinum brooch for 100 gold.
  • Info: Gypsy (in the inn) says a dragon (Athron) lives in the tunnels near Mertis.
  • In the spiral pit to the north of Mertis, you can obtain the pearl brooch.

Missions and Plot Information in and around Spire
  • Mission: bring cheap wine for Eustace. He will pay 35 gold/jug.
  • Mission: There is a wizard living outdoors to the north-west of Spire who is looking for a black drake fang. If you take him one, he will reward you by teaching you summon aid (L3).
  • Info: the man in the tool shop says to ask Scab about stealing the mayor’s circlet. This circlet is wanted by Sulfras the dragon, before s/he will let you use the exit.
  • Info: Scab is in the stands overlooking the arena. Before he will help you to steal the circlet, you have to go through the arena several times to prove your competence. For increasing rewards of gold, you have to fight four monsters of increasing difficulty. After that, Scab tells you two things. First, to get the circlet you will need a key, which is hidden in a cave not far to the west of Spire. Second, you will also need to talk to a man called Asp, tell him Scab’s name and ask about the circlet.

  • ‘X’ will teach mage spells, but only after you have visited Bargha. The spells he teaches are [expensive]: summon aid, beast ceremony, fireblast, arcane summon, arcane shield, arcane blow.
  • Priest spells [slightly expensive]: healing, curing, battle rage, shielding, repel spirit, smite, summon shade, safe travel, unshackle mind, mass healing, mass curing.
  • After you have visited Boutell’s forge in Fort Draco, and when your reputation is high enough (21 is enough) then Thrandell will also teach the following priest spells [exorbitant]: divine warrior, divine restoration, divine host.

Missions and Plot Information in and around the Tower of Magi
  • Mission (for Ambrin): kill the ogre mage to the north. In the ogre cave you can learn far sight (L3) and there is also some rogue's leather and a beserk mind crystal. Your reward back in the Tower of Magi is shielding (L3).
  • Info: in order to get some Graymold, ask Phyllea in Draco about Cortath, who went on a trip to find some.
  • Info: The Tower is ruled by three very powerful magi. These are Linda, Solberg and ‘X’. Linda, seeking further power, has summoned a haakai lord to the Tower, which will ultimately prove to be just one of a series of demon-related misjudgements. Solberg, having quarrelled with Linda, has wisely gone off to live in his own tower (south of Formello). And ‘X’ is very keen to develop a spell that will allow him to drop an anvil on someone’s head--someone like Linda, perhaps?
  • Once you have dispel barrier, you will be able to gain access to learn haste (L3) within the Tower.
  • After you kill the Adze-Haakai, ‘X’ will teach you anatomy skill (3000 gold/level).
  • Herbs: to the west of the Tower (north of the lava) there is a patch of energetic herbs. To the north of the Tower (east of Mertis) there is a patch of spiritual herbs.
